New Hospital Breaks Ground In Merritt Island

March 21, 2924 – About 200 people attended the groundbreaking ceremony for the new 268,000-square-foot Health First Cape Canaveral Hospital to be built on a 14-acre campus at 255 Borman Drive, across State Road 520 near Merritt Square Mall.

It’s a great project and one that the Merritt Island Redevelopment Agency has supported. Read background here. The hospital is expected to open its doors in early 2027. (Artist’s rendering above provided by Health First).

The latest facts and figures on the project were discussed during the ceremony:

  • 120 private inpatient beds
  • 25 emergency department treatment rooms
  • Six operating rooms
  • Five stories tall
  • 650 Staff
  • 533 covered parking spots
  • 296 paved surface parking spots
  • Designed to withstand a Category 4 hurricane
  • Constructed 13 feet above sea level to withstand storm surge

Although the project has been scaled back from the “Wellness Village” concept first announced, the economic impact of the new hospital will be significant on Merritt Island. It is expected that new restaurants and retail shops will soon be created to support the people using the facility.

The existing Cape Canaveral Hospital, which will be moving to the new facility, has been on Newsweek’s list of World Best Hospitals for four consecutive years.
