Merritt Island’s Schools Ranked High in Nation

April 23, 2023 – Brevard Public Schools can certainly be proud of the county’s high schools, with seven of them getting on a list of the top 100 in Florida, but we have to make a special mention of Merritt Island’s own Edgewood Jr./Sr. High, that scored an impressive ranking of #2 in Brevard, #6 in Florida and # 57 in the nation.

Released today, the data is from U.S. News and World Report, which has once again ranked the top high schools nationwide and within Florida.

Merritt Island High School also made the list, ranking 296 in Florida and 5,616 in the nation.

In a separate report last year, Robert L. Stevenson Elementary School in Merritt Island ranked #2 in Brevard and #14 in Florida.

According to Florida Today, “To determine the ranking, U.S. News and World Report worked with RTI International, a global nonprofit social science research firm. They summed schools’ weighted scores across six indicators of school quality — college readiness, college curriculum breadth, state assessment proficiency, state assessment performance, underserved student performance and graduation rate — and computed a single 0-100 overall score to indicate each school’s performance across these metrics.

“The same methodology was used to rank schools nationally and within their states, though ranks were resorted among schools within each state. Individual rankings for schools in the bottom 25% were not released, with ranges posted instead.

“Nearly 17,660 high schools were ranked nationally, with 647 schools ranked in Florida. Here’s how Brevard ranked.”
